We have an exciting opportunity to be a part of the City of Burnaby’s award-winning Transportation team! Reporting to the Senior Manager, Transportation- Transportation Development and Projects, the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) will be a key-player in the success and organization of the department. The EIT will assist senior staff in conducting or leading engineering studies, and reviewing specifications, plans, and documents to ensure conformance with bylaws and guidelines. If you are someone who prides yourself on your analytical nature and independent judgment, you will thrive in this role as you review specifications, check work performed by others, and assist in problem-solving of policy and contentious matters. In this role, your excellent attention to detail and communication skills will help you establish relationships with both internal and external contacts, as well as the public.

You will participate in engineering assignments pertaining to transportation engineering, traffic operations, and road safety, such as the following:
• Undertake the design of municipal transportation infrastructure including preparation or review of design layouts, road cross-sections, road functional designs, pavement marking and traffic signage plans, specifications and technical data, making field inspections and making computations;
• Carry out review of new developments and identify transportation requirements, checks transportation designs submitted by consultants for technical adequacy, scope of work, and conformance to Municipal standards and specifications and other relevant transportation industry guidelines;
• Undertake traffic operations and capacity analysis and modelling for intersections and corridors;
• Conduct road safety assessment and analysis, identifying the concerns, preparing solution options, and undertaking option evaluation;
• Liaise with external transportation agencies on matters related to transportation infrastructure; and
• Prepare reports and internal technical memos to communicate engineering reviews and assessment, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
• Perform related work as required

Qualifications include a University Degree in Applied Science (Engineering) with eligibility for registration as an Engineer-in-Training in BC and co-op experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and will be expected to prepare and present reports and technical memos to various stakeholders. The incumbent will need to navigate office applications and related Engineering software (e.g. AutoCAD) and transportation analysis tools (e.g. Synchro, SimTraffic, Vissim, AutoCAD, AutoTURN, etc), along with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. A Valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is a requirement of the position.
