Co-op Student - PC Technician (Information Technology)

Under minimal supervision, the PC Technician Co-op Student is responsible for imaging, configuring, and installing PCs identified for life cycling. The Co-Op student may also provide direct customer technical support by consulting, advising, analyzing, troubleshooting, and solving operation problems for employees and remote contractors. The incumbent will support the branch with installs, tests, and maintain computer equipment, printers, operating software, network peripherals, mobile data terminals, wireless communications, telephone systems, and associated applications

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to requests for customer service and delivers general support by providing one on one technical support via phone, email, full-service desk software, or in person. 
  • Analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves both technical and account related problems with operating systems, software applications, printers, and other peripheral devices or related end user tools.
  • Sets up and ensures the effectiveness of initial system implementation, ongoing systems modifications, and enhancements.
  • Maintains the effectiveness of Council chambers audio/visual system, ongoing systems modifications, and enhancements. 
  • Administers, operates, and troubleshoots the audio/visual system during Council meetings.
  • Troubleshoots and supports all audio/visual systems throughout the Municipality, including but not limited to, video conference systems, projectors, TV’s, microphones, and speaker systems. 
  • Provides support to departmental staff with troubleshooting for telephones, radios, and peripherals.  
  • Maintains working knowledge and inventory of all municipal hardware, systems software, and communications equipment.
  • Provides afterhours first-line support for RES dispatch (911) as well as other public entities, including but not limited to, server reboots, application issues, network related errors and outages. 
  • Writes and maintains written procedures for all aspects of installations, upgrades, maintenance, and use of systems and software.
  • Researches and makes recommendations to replace, or eliminate existing equipment, computer hardware and/or software.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains software install packages, as well as Windows Operating Systems images, relevant patching schedules, and new releases. 
  • Prioritizes own daily workload and ensures date/time sensitive work plans and deadlines are kept on schedule.
  • Assists with scheduling software and hardware implementations, upgrades, and maintenance.
  • Maintains, adjusts, and negotiates project schedules and makes recommendations to keep projects on budget.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems hardware and software, and the ability to learn, understand, and apply new developments in servers, workstations, operating systems, communications hardware and software, wireless and mobile data terminals, and application software.
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to communicate courteously and effectively with customers.
  • Ability to maintain focus on providing customers with computing services.
  • High degree of precision and accuracy in documentation and investigative procedures. 
  • Ability to work independently and to effectively schedule work in order to meet service demands and minimize disruption to users.
  • Adaptability to frequent technological changes and ability to learn, demonstrate, and teach new software and hardware processes to users.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and provide solutions to complex issues.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be enrolled in a post-secondary program in Computer Information Systems or related program, specializing in computer software/hardware and PC operating systems is required.
  • Experience troubleshooting computers and software is an asset. 
  • A+ certification and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v3 knowledge and certification are considered assets.
  • Macintosh computer troubleshooting experience is considered an asset.
  • Must be enrolled in a Co-op placement program.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check for review and acceptance.


RECRUITMENT PROCESS: 

 

Candidates who are successful during the interview process will be required to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of enrollment in a full-time post-secondary Co-Op program.
  • A copy of their high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Contact information for two supervisory references.
  • Copy of a valid Class Five (5) driver's license. Please note that a class 7 or GDL license will not be accepted.
  • A three-year Driver's Abstract issued within the last 30 days.
  • A criminal record check issued by the town/city where the applicant resides.
